1. Basic Listening 1:
Basic Listening 1 helps students to become familiar and practise listening comprehension skills step by step. This course consists of 14 units including a number of topics, situations related to daily life such as number and address, names and places, times and dates, ….
2. BASIC SPEAKING 1 + PRONUNCIATION
This is one of the prerequisite modules in the training programme for English majors. It includes 2 sections. Section 1 aims to equip the students with basic knowledge and practice of English pronunciation rules. Section 2 aims at familiarizing the students with communicative activities in speaking classes.
3. BASIC READING 1
Basic Reading 1 is one of the compulsory subjects, specifically designed for the Pre-Intermediate students of English. The purpose of this course is to increase vocabulary with an emphasis on reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. It also aims at providing basic reading strategies such as scanning, skimming, predicting, etc.
4. BASIC WRITING I
Basic Writing I is one of the four language skills for the first year students. This course is specifically designed for the Pre-intermediate students of English. The student’s writingwill demonstrate competence in sentence completeness, sentence common errors, sentence variety, accurate punctuation, and the conventions of standard written English.
5. English Grammar 1 (2 credits)
This course gives an introduction of the definitions and nature of different clause elements in English, namely subject, verb, object, complement, and adverb. It also deals with phrases, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and prepositional phrases.
6. FRENCH 1
This compulsory course aims to help students understand different kinds of spoken and written texts and communicate in French at the elementary level. This course also provides students with the knowledge of social culture and that of French such as lexicology – semantics, pronunciation, grammar, etc.
7. Basic Listening 2:
Basic Listening 2 provides a listening process by creating active thinking and listening skills. This course consists of 14 units arranged on the basis of themes or topics describing daily life: health, travel and tourism, festivals and holidays ....
8. BASIC SPEAKING 2
This is the second module on English speaking skills. It aims to help the students practice using English in daily conversations to make greetings/ requets, give offers, ask for information/ permission, etc. It includes simple speaking activities on topics such asFriendship, Keeping fit, Travelling, Student life, etc.
9. BASIC READING 2
Basic Reading 2 is one of the compulsory subjects, specifically designed for the first year students of English who already finished Basic Reading 1. It aims to provide students strategies for reading different types of reading texts more effectively with better concentration.
10. BASIC WRITING II
Basic Writing II is one of the four language skills for the first year students. This course is specifically designed for the Pre-intermediate students of English. It aims at helping the students improve writing skills and master paragraph writing, writing letters, writing a summary and report, describing people and places.
11. FRENCH 2
This compulsory course aims to help students understand different kinds of spoken and written texts and communicate in French at the pre-intermediate level. This course also provides students with the knowledge of social culture and that of French such as lexicology – semantics, pronunciation, grammar, etc.
12. Basic Listening 3:
There are suitable listening exercises to help learners quickly improve the listening skills through the language materials selected from the situations in real life. This course consists of 14 units including topics such as: Advertisements, the Internet, conservation, ....
13. BASIC SPEAKING 3
This is the third module on English speaking skills. Its aim is to provide the students with speaking activities in which they express their opinion by answering suggested questions on topics such as Foreign language learning, Self-study, Students and part-time job, Books, Country life and City life, Computer, Internet, etc.
14. BASIC READING 3
Basic Reading 3 is one of the compulsory subjects, specifically designed for the students of English who already finished Basic Reading 2. The purpose is to develop and strengthen skills in preparation for Advanced Reading Courses. Attention is given to speed reading, skimming for general sense, summarizing, etc.
15. BASIC WRITING III
Basic Writing III is one of the four language skills for the second year students. This course is specifically designed for the Intermediate students of English. It aims at helping the students understand and practise some different types of paragraphs in English: descriptive, narrative, opinion, comparative and cause-effect.
16. Phonetics-Phonology (2 credits)
This course deals with the descriptions and classifications of sounds in English, namely vowels and consonants basing on the features and manner of articulation, and discusses the rules of articulation and sound variables.
17. FRENCH 3
This compulsory course aims to provide students with the knowledge of social culture and that of French such as lexicology – semantics, pronunciation, grammar, etc. so that the students can understand more about France and other European countries.
18. Advanced Listening 1:
Advanced Listening 1 aims to teach students practical strategies before they listen to lectures. The lectures are shorter and easier to understand. This course consists of 14 units including a number of common and practical topics in daily life such as biology, history, art ...
19. ADVANCED SPEAKING 1
This is the fourth module on English speaking skills. The course aims to help the students improve their oral fluency through discussing social issues of general interest and have them work cooperatively in class to solve problems on topics such as Love, Environment, Smoking, Careers, etc.
20. ADVANCED READING 1
Advanced Reading 1 is one of the compulsory subjects, specifically designed for the second year students of English who already finished the credits of Basic Reading. It aims to provide students strategies of putting the given sentences into correct places, drawing conclusions based on information in the reading passage, etc.
21. ADVANCED WRITING I
Advanced Writing I is one of the four language skills for the second year students. This course is designed for the Intermediate students of English. It helps students improve writing skills, and enable them to produce well-organized essays. Besides, students are required to practise the steps in essay writing .
22. TRANSLATION 1
This course aims to provide students with fundamental theoretical knowledge of translation such as translation principles, translation strategies, text analysis…Translation skills will be developed through the translation of the short texts of common topics in both Vietnamese and English.
23. TRANSLATION 2
This course is aimed to provide students with translating texts in the fields of Tourism, education, economy, telecommunications & international organizations, novels; poems, projects and legal document. Students will analyze and translatetexts, discuss and evaluate translated versions; and develop translation skills and learn some vocabulary in the selected fields.
24. Advanced Listening 2:
“Advanced Listening 2” aims to give students practical strategies before they listen to lectures. The lectures in this module are similar to the ones taught in class. In this course, students can also listen to the news in English. This course consists of 14 items relating to daily life.
25. ADVANCED SPEAKING 2
This is the 5th module on English speaking skills. The course aims to help the students improve their oral fluency through debates on topics such as Health care, Sports, Education, Tourism, etc. and providing them with basic techniques of giving a presentation using posters.
26. ADVANCED READING 2
Advanced Reading 2 is one of the compulsory subjects, specifically designed for the third year students of English who already finished the credit of Advanced Reading 1. The purpose of this course is to review the reading strategies for effective reading at advanced and proficiency levels.
27. ADVANCED WRITING II
Advanced Writing II is one of the four language skills for the third year students. This course is specifically designed for the Advanced students of English. It aims at helping students write different types of essays in English: description, narration, comparison and contrast, causes and effects, argumentation- persuasion.
28. Contrastive Analysis (2 credits)
The focus of this course is to provide students with knowledge, pschological aspects, linguistic elements of contrastive analysis in languistics. Morever, the course deals with the contrastive analysis of language; the application in language teaching, learning and translation with the focus on the similarities and differences between English and Vietnamese.
29. English Grammar 2 (3 credits)
This course aims to provide students with knowledge of different types of sentences in English, namely simple sentences, compound sentences and complex sentences. This course also gives details of different elements in each type of sentence so that students have a deeper look at English grammar.
30. Advanced Listening 3:
Advanced Listening 3 is designed to bring students with appropriate strategies when they take the TOEFL, IELTS or similar examinations. The exercises are designed in the format of the exams for international certificate such as TOEFL, IELTS, but shorter and easier to understand. This course consists of 14 units.
31. ADVANCED SPEAKING 3
This is the last of the 6 compulsory modules on English speaking. The course aims to help the students analyze and have a deeper understanding about social issues, raising the students’ awareness of the changes in modern society and helping the students to develop teamwork skills and speech delivery skills.
32. ADVANCED WRITING III
Advanced Writing III is one of the four language skills for the third year students. This course is specifically designed for the Advanced students of English. It aims at helping students write different types of graphs in English: line graphs, bar charts, pie charts, tables, and process diagrams.
33. Lexicology- Semantics (2 credits)
This course gives an introduction of some basic definitions and terms such as words and their origins, morphological structure of English words; and deals with the meanings and some issues related to its study. Students are expected to understand word meanings, sentence meanings and meaning relationships.
34. An introduction to linguistics (2 credits)
This course aims to provide students with basic knowledge of linguistics such as the nature and function of language, langue and parole, speech and writing. It also covers a wide range of different viewpoints and terms such as synchronic vs diachronic study, sentence vs utterance, deixis, reference, dialects or jargon.
35. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This is a compulsory course for students of English, following the prerequisite courses in language elements and skills.This course provides basic knowledge about a wide range of issues related to research and research methodology in language learning, writing a research paper, and the popular writing style of research - APA.
36. INTERPRETING 1
This course aims to provide students with types of interpreting, necessary knowledge for interpreters, difficulties faced by interpreters and ways to overcome them. Students will practise interpreting dialogues, interviews, news, reports of education, economics and agriculture, and practise necessary interpreting skills such as memorizing, note-taking, public speaking…
37. ENGLISH FOR ECONOMICS
This is a compulsory module in the training programme for English majors. The courseaims to provide the students with knowledge about such economic issues as definition of economics, economic systems, microeconomics and macroeconomics, organization of the market economy, supply and demand, prices and income
38. English Literature
This is an overview of English literature in its six main periods on such aspects as trends, types, characteristics, themes and typical authors and their works, and on events that have considerible effects on the English literature
39. INTERPRETING 2
Interpreting 2 aims at providing training consecutive interpreting techniques Within 60 credit periods, students will practice interpreting techniques and carrying out interpreting task. The interpreting materials are authentic texts with a view to linking theory and practice.
40. ENGLISH FOR SECRETARIES AND OFFICE STAFF
This course is an optional module subiect for English majors, aiming to develop the communication skills that the students need to succeed in realistic management and business situations. It is most suitable for the students who are at the intermediate language level. It enlarges their knowledge of the office world
41. ENGLISH FOR TOURISM
This course is an optional module for English majors. The course helps the students understand the key terms in tourism and practise communication skills. It enlarges knowledge of travel agency, tour operation, guiding skills. Besides, students are required to present some tourist attractions in Vietnam and in the world.
42. Cross-Culture Communication (2 credits)
This course discusses intralingual, paralingual and extralingual aspects manifested in cross-culture and in-culture communication with a specific focus on cross-culture pragmatics, which covers a wide range of different terms such as politeness, directness-indirectness, power in communication with the reference to the theoretical background and studies of Hofstede, Brown & Levinson, etc.
43. BRITISH STUDIES
This course provides students with basic understanding of British people and culture. Moreover, this module presents information about the history of British from Pre-Norman Britain to the present time; British Institutions: constitution, Monarchy, Legislature, Executive, elections and political parties; Judiciary; British education system and traditional culture.
44. AMERICAN STUDIES
This course provides students with basic understanding of American people and culture: a brief history of the United States of America, its political institutions and educational system. Another purpose is to introduce students to some other aspects of the United States, such as traditional values, customs and beliefs, and holidays;
45. Discourse Analysis(2 credits)
This course aims to provide students with basic knowledge of structures of English discourse and conversation in the influence of culture and ideology. It focuses on cohesion and coherence in language, the effects of roles and relationships of the participants on the selection of suitable language and information structure.
46. Pragmatics (2 credits)
Pragmatics, a branch of modern linguistics, focuses on the study of how language works in the real life. This course enables students to have skills of discourse analysis, understanding of meanings in context so as to enhance their communicative efficiency.
47. ENGLISH FOR JOURNALISM
This is an elective module in the training programme for English majors. The course aims to equip the students with basic understanding of English used in newspaper articles on different areas of topics, enriching the students’ English vocabulary used in the press and helping them improve their advanced reading skills.
48. ENGLISH FOR LAW
This is an elective module in the training programme for English majors. The course aims at providing the students with law terminology and helping them improve their advanced reading skills. This module includes 10 chapters about state law, administrative law, civil law, company law.
49. ADVANCED INTEGRATED SKILLS
This compulsory course aims ato help the students to improve advanced English integrated skills, to practice techniques in TOFEL and IELTS examinations, and to practice skills for job application. The course includes 5 units about topics of family, social relationships, teaching and learning, cross-cultural communication, and skills for job application.
50. ADVANCED TRANSLATION
This compulsory course aims at providing English majors with the necessary skills for solving problems related to translation such as guessing the meaning of words and phrases, word choice, etc. In addition, students are equipped with knowledge about such topics as economics, finance, science and technology and other social issues.
